What makes a Corset Steampunk?

The phrase “if you call it steampunk, it is steampunk” is something we’re firmly in favor of. Steampunk is a very individualistic expression of creativity and fantasy and we don’t think anyone should be in a position to tell you how you should express your creativity. That aside, there are certain elements and items that embrace the traditional concepts of steampunk with a little more verve and vigor.

Corsets fall right in line with the Victorian era steampunk aesthetic. Corsets were at their height of popularity in the Victorian age, which is where steampunk draws its inspiration. So a corset of any type is a pretty safe steampunk bet. Of course, a steampunk corset can get way more interesting than your standard laces and satin.

Steampunk corsets can make use of some unique materials that aren’t often seen in traditional corsets. Metal, leather and chain can all unique elements of steampunk to your corset. Many steampunk corsets also make use of leather straps, reminiscent of bandoliers, to further add a sense of military accouterments or adventurer’s style.

As for fabrics, steampunk corsets often use heavier materials to make a statement. Embossed leather bodies and brocade in deep, rich shades of blue, red and purple are often seen, while rich fabrics like velvet, damask and satin are also popular. Embellishments like crests can also add a certain element of royalty and aristocracy as well.

When choosing your steampunk corset, consider what your character is like and what they may need on their adventures. Are they a delicate flower from the aristocracy? A daring pilot? A charming adventurer? Considering your character as a real person with real needs will better help you find and choose the corset they would be most likely to wear. For example, a lone assassin won’t make much use out of a damask brocade corset with delicate details, but they may certainly like a pinstripe, leather overlaid simple sweetheart corset that features pockets on the front and sturdy cord lacing up the back.

Companies like The Violet Vixen, Rebel’s Market and Medieval Collectibles all show a variety of unique and fun corsets that you can add to your steampunk closet. Items
