Getting sexy with it: why dressing sexy doesn’t make you any less steampunk

We’ve all seen the backlash some women get for wearing a racy steampunk costume: people try to call them out for “faking” or not being “steampunk enough” (whatever that means), but we don’t buy that.  Embracing your sexy side doesn’t stop your from being steampunk.

Time and again, people reiterate that steampunk has no real rules, just a set of loose guidelines. So if dressing sexy is what you enjoy, then don’t let anyone say it’s not steampunk.

To start with, being racy with your steampunk outfit doesn’t mean you’re limited to burlesque characters or ladies of the night. Sexy adventurers, pilots and assassins are all great options. Get creative with the costumes by using chaps or cropped tops to show some skin, while still having plenty of fabric to attach chains, bandoliers or other accessories to.

Steampunk corsets are also a great way to add some va-va-voom to your outfit. Underbust corsets will give you great waist to bust ratio by whittling down your mid-section, which will make your bust appear larger. While overbust corsets with leather strapping or sweetheart necklines will work better for an adventurer type costume while still looking striking.

Burlesque-style skirts that show off the thigh will give you the chance to not only show skin, but to also showcase snazzy tights, a leather garter or even a thigh holster. Stockings with garter tops will also add some great vintage allure to your outfit.

At the same time, being sexy doesn’t mean you have to show off acres of skin. Visually interesting steampunk corsets over long dresses will still be striking and appealing and not make you uncomfortable if showing skin isn’t your thing.

Like just about any other element in steampunk, it’s important to embrace your own identity and creativity when it comes to designing your character and your costumes. If being sexy is your thing, don’t let anyone tell you it’s not steampunk. Whether your version of sexy is crop tops and leather chaps or long, voluminous skirts, leather corsets and a high lace-neck, they both embrace the beauty, uniqueness and creativity of steampunk.  Contact us today!
